Jax and the Hellhound Online Graphic Novel
The origin of the project
Back in 1996, I was tapped by publisher Steve Schanes to create the line of characters for his color line. I got the job to create over 300 major and minor characters for his ambitious Blackthorne Universe. I told him that I wanted to pursue a few personal projects and outlined my cast of characters and the plot to Jax and the Hellhound.
I had the good fortune to work in the distant past with President Ronald Reagan's push to promote the then First Lady Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" project. That lead to a series of anti-drug propaganda comics. The drug wars happened to be big news back then.
Jax (Jacob Morosco) was born from my fever dreams as a child. At a very young age I had contracted a very bad case of bronchitis and I was not given much chance to live. My great aunt was given the opportunity to try her hand at healing when the doctor said that he could not do much more.
During that period, I had amazing fever dreams that involved seeing and feeling things that existed around me that was not obviously real. Because I was heavily medicated, I felt no fear or distress at what I saw during my illness. I never forgot the experience and felt compelled to use the ideas in my work.
